Franklyn Malone was born in Rocky Mountain, North Carolina. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1941 and served as a bugler in the 4089th Quartermaster Corps. The Quartermaster units and personnel were in the English Channel, on Omaha Beach and Utah Beach, when the Allies landed on June 6, 1944. The 4089th landed on Omaha Beach, in Normandy, France and immediately began setting up a depot and hauling equipment to the front lines. Supplies were taken to the front lines and unloaded directly to user units, with the bulk of the missions being completed under shellfire. The trucks were sent out with Infantrymen aboard spearhead thrusts, and when resistance was encountered, the truck drivers found themselves taking part in the fighting. Men of these companies performed guard with the line troops; in emergencies they manned machine-guns and outposts, carried barbed wire and mines into positions forward of existing front lines, and shared the same rigors and dangers as did the divisional troops. It was in these conditions that Franklyn earned his three Battle Stars. Franklyn attended college for three years, specializing in prosthetics and became certified as a dental technician.
He has been a District of Columbia resident for 58 years. He later began work at the Government Printing Office as a printer until retirement. Upon retirement, Franklyn went on to become a tennis coach and today, still coaches for seniors.
